Ice Rink Initiative

Seasonal Ice Rink for Downtown Hamilton.

Creating a winter tradition for our community.

Hamilton hasn’t had an ice rink since the 1990's. Bringing one to our community will provide winter recreation for all ages, boost off-season traffic for our local businesses, and create a gathering place that builds connection. 

To ensure the rink is positioned for maximum long-term benefit, the Hamilton Downtown Foundation has determined that the project will be best served by targeting a launch in the 2026–2027 winter season. This timeline allows for thoughtful planning, continued collaboration, and the development of a well-supported community asset.

The Rink:

Hamilton Downtown Foundation aims to purchase a 44' x 80' refrigerated, seasonal ice rink. This size accommodates up to 50 skaters at a time and supports the ability to play 3 v 3 pond style hockey games. 

Why Refrigeration?

Upgrading to a refrigerated unit provides consistent ice regardless of weather, extending skating into fall and spring. This investment ensures we get the most use from the rink. Imagine being able to skate from Thanksgiving until Spring Break!

Location:

HDF is continuing its work to identify the ideal long-term home for the community ice rink. With new opportunities, community partnerships, and site considerations emerging, the Foundation is taking the time needed to ensure the rink is placed where it can thrive for years to come.

By targeting a launch in the 2026–2027 winter season, we can thoughtfully plan, collaborate with partners, and set this project up for lasting success. As this work continues, HDF will keep the community updated and involved every step of the way.
